Well, I disagree to a point. I "worked" for the Interstate Commerce Commission for five months in the early 70's. Both taxes and social security payments were deducted from my paycheck. I understand what you are saying and I suppose you could say I was subsidizing my own paycheck!
I only lasted for five months working in DC. I soon discovered the government mostly hired the mentally and morally unfit in all of its agencies. I lived in Baltimore and worked in DC. I rode the train to and from work along with 100 or more other drones. They were all the same, complaining about the 30 minutes worth of actual work they had to cram into their 8 hour days. I had too much self respect to want to make a career out of the ICC.

I have mixed feeling on this one. Tax dollars spent wisely to accomplish something the services the requirement of the Constitutional duties are very important and I have no problem paying people what they are worth.
The opposite side of that is mostly created to create empires and produce worked for the sake of doing work. Then they pay 10 affirmative action employees and political appointees to do the job of 1 person that probably should not be done by the Federal Government anyways.
