I feel bad for the second tier teams but in the past when one has been included it’s usually been a blowout.

The major programs build up their rankings by beating up on teams which can’t compete. This isn’t something new or unknown. The power conference teams should be penalized for playing the teams from lesser division.

Division 1A should play only other Division 1A teams. They don’t do it because they don’t want to risk a loss before they go into conference games. They should not benefit from padding their schedule with patsies.

Those smaller schools rely on the big boys for a payday. They are more than glad to do it. Beyond the eye test the metrics that go into the rankings take into account quality of opponents regardless of who they are. I understand what you are saying though about avoiding a top non-conference opponent early on. Ohio State generally has 3 non conference opponents at the start with one of them being a quality 1A opponent.

There was a time when they all didn’t do it. That was a time when one loss didn’t nearly end your chances to be considered the best team in the country.

Now they all do it because it’s almost to the point that you need an undefeated season.
