Everything now seems to be "virtual"

I think if I never again hear the word "virtual"--never!--it will be too soon.

This evening, my wife--who is a member of the board here, at our condominium complex--is required to attend a "virtual" meeting, by telephone.

Now, if she were actually to be in the clubhouse, I would have no objection. None whatsoever.

But this "virtual" garbage needs to stop. Immediately, if not sooner!

I think there's a lot to that. Indeed, there might not even be anyone at a meeting shown to be attended by a hundred people (for effect).

    Does anyone care?

I suppose there ought to be laws that regulate this stuff. Do you suppose Mitch is up to it?

Add the words, covid, social distancing, masks and, lockdowns, to the list.

Telephone conferences and Skype/Zoom meetings have been happening in business for years now. For many people, it's far more convenient than trying to attend in-person conferences or meetings, given traffic, parking, commute time, never mind having to travel to other cities or countries. Many companies have reduced their expenses by embracing this technology.

Obviously with Covid-19, there are now even more people opting to communicate via technology but why does this upset you?

Because robust socialization is essential to human health and happiness? And the insidious "new normal" is aggressively antisocial?

I prefer the virtual meetings in most cases. But I am an introvert. I is also a big productivity loss to travel across the city for meetings at HQ or other sites.

Certainly if your only interactions with the people in your life are "virtual", it is less than ideal, however as a temporary measure or as a business tool, I don't see it as a problem. However, what is concerning is the trend among younger people to communicate almost exclusively via their smart phones rather than in person and that has nothing to do with Covid-19.

But, @Dr. Who, they said in the OP post that they all live in the same complex.

No traveling at all. Just walking down to the club house.

It is clear that the people in the complex are avoiding unnecessary in-person contact, perhaps because many belong to an at-risk demographic. Nevertheless, this will not continue indefinitely. In general, however, "virtual" meetings are simply more practical and less expensive in many cases, than doing so in person. I don't see it as a problem because it also allows for more frequent meaningful interactions between colleagues in business or even between family members who live very far apart. It also allows many more people the option of working from home which can be very beneficial for people with kids.
