    Post editing

There are two different issues with editing comments made by others.

First, there’s actually altering the words of others to change the actual subject of the comment, usually accompanied by “fixed that for you” type stupidity. That should not be allowed.

There’s extracting one sentence or paragraph with the intent of responding to that specific part of a comment with no alterations. There’s nothing wrong it’s that.

Agreed. If the original poster feels as though the responder deliberately took a part of their post out of context for nefarious reasons, they're free to point that out. Unless a post that I'm responding to is overly lengthy, I'll usually just quote the whole thing and bold the part of it that I'm addressing...but there's nothing wrong with leaving out that part of the post that you're not responding to - especially if you employ the "..." to indicate that you've done that.

How do people feel about the practice of putting a line through part of someone's post? (I've never actually figured out how to do that on this board.) Should that be okay?

You have to Go Advanced then the strikethrough option is available.

Although it is probably more deliberately rude than simply eliding text would be, I don't think it should be prohibited. FYI, to put a line through text you need to go Advanced, highlight the text and choose the s symbol in the ribbon.
In quoting my post, you affirm and agree that you have not been goaded, provoked, emotionally manipulated or otherwise coerced into responding.

I do the bold thing, too, to show the part of the post I'm responding to. I'm on one professional forum where posters are very gracious--if they remove a non-relevant part of a post, they'll typically add in "...respectfully snipped for focus..." and that seems to satisfy most.

I don't mind the word-changing as long as it's done in a lighthearted manner.

Especially when some of the posts are so long. Huge and unnecessary pictures. Oversized print. Multiple spacing. Cut an paste lists.

You have to pull out what you are responding to.

I'll do both, bold or elide. Bold (would use italics but quotes are in italics) if the post quoted is to the point, elide (with ... marks) if it wanders all over the place. The latter is standard for quoting.

I've done that too but it seems to irritate some people.

I've also seen gray outs used.
