Blackish Squirrel

I have what I first identified a few weeks agao as a black squirrell ( color variation of Gray) in my yard. But upon getting a good look today I realize he has some gray ( not surpring) and the red head of yet another type of squirrel. I have always assumed that grays with red on them were crosses. If correct I may have atri-racial rodent!

There are black squirrels in Palo Alto. You see them up and down San Antonio Road: not dark grey, jet black. I had never seen one before then.

Black squirrels are a large part of the population here on the SC shoreline. They segregate. You will see the black squirrels only in some places and the gray squirrels in others. If you are on the golf course then you will see black squirrels. If you are in a neighborhood then you only see the gray squirrels. I often wondered if it was because of all the Pines on the golf course vs Oaks in the neighborhoods.

We've had black squirrels in Ohio for decades. The black squirrels of Kent are famous. I'm a couple hours south of there, and they are common in my area as well. I get leaping pics of them on my trail cams all the time.

I'm going to leave that one alone except to say I figured the gray squirrels would be on the golf course and the black squirrels in the neighborhoods

Like many animals with fur, they come in all colors and shades. Most squirrels that are of a specific color tend to inhabit a specific territory for some reason.

Here in Texas, brown and reddish brown squirrels are common. I've seen a grey here and there, but not like it is in Western states.

But here in the South, more squirrels seem to be plain old red, because they run under car tires instead of waiting for traffic to leave before jutting across roads.



Although I live in a large city, I live in an apartment complex that is small, with lots of trees.
When I moved in, I saw rabbits, squirrels, doves, robins, and ducks. I fully expected Snow White to come around the corner of a building singing, covered in animals. LOL

Most people here drive slow when they see the rabbits and squirrels out playing or running around for food.
I had to stop earlier this week, because I was leaving to go to the store, and a squirrel was being......well, squirrely......he kept jutting back and forth from one side of the road to the other. I had to just completely stop until he made up his mind!! LOL.

No matter WHAT color a squirrel is, its still squirrely!!
