Is there a problem with maximizing registrations

If it were non-partisan, no. However, when a partisan group is doing the legwork, they can’t be expected to actively be trying to register those who they don’t evaluate as sympathetic to their cause. This is why ballot harvesting is illegal in some states. Once it becomes partisan, it merely becomes an effort to multiply votes for your own party among those who probably wouldn’t have voted otherwise. More than any questionable voting machines or false ballots I suspect this is how Dems have been successful in this election cycle. Activists effectively voting multiple times through surrogates who would not have otherwise voted and pawning it off as a public service.
