    NUTS!!! - December 22, 1944 - Bastogne

On December 22 around 11:30 am, a German major, a captain, and two enlisted men carrying a white flag approached an outpost held by Sergeant Oswald Y. Butler of F Company, 327th Glider Infantry Regiment. The Germans identified themselves as parliamentarians and requested to speak to the commanding general. The soldiers were blindfolded and held under guard while the German major was taken to give his written commands to the regimental plans and operations officer of the 327th Regiment, Major Alvin Jones. Jones relayed the message to Headquarters. German General Heinrich Freiherr Von Luttwitz demanded that the American troops surrender defense of Bastogne or be faced with “total annihilation” within two hours. General McAuliffe’s response was “Nuts!”

    Pledge of Allegiance - December 28, 1945

On this date in history: Congress recognized the Pledge of Allegiance. On December 28, 1945, Congress officially recognized the Pledge of Allegiance and encouraged its recitation in schools. The Pledge was supposedly written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus Day. The words “under God” were added by Congress in 1954. The revised version of the Pledge was more recently the subject of litigation before the United States Supreme Court originally brought by Michael Newdow, a parent who unsuccessfully objected to his daughter's school district policy requiring daily recitation of the Pledge. The court ruled that Newdow had no standing.

    December 29, 1845 - Texas attains U.S. statehood

Texas attains U.S. statehood - On December 29, 1845, Texas became the twenty-eighth state to join the United States of America when U.S. President James K. Polk signed the Ordinance of Annexation. Texas had a complicated path to statehood, because it had formerly been part of Mexico and then an independent republic. The U.S. Congress passed the Annexation of the Republic of Texas Joint Resolution on March 1, 1845. Voters in Texas then approved the Ordinance of Annexation in October, before it was approved by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Polk on this day in 1845.

The U.S. Supreme Court later ruled in Texas v. White that, despite its unique path to statehood, Texas did not have the right to secede from the union.

    Post 1980 - January 7 - Chrysler Bailed Out....

On January 7, 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed the Chrysler Corporation Loan Guarantee Act of 1979 (Public Law 96-185) into law.

The Act granted to Chrysler $1.5 billion to save the company from bankruptcy. Twenty-eight years later in 2008, President George W. Bush authorized $17.4 billion to again bailout Chrysler in addition to the other two major American automobile manufacturers, Ford and General Motors.

1587 - February 8: Mary, Queen of Scots executed

On February 8, 1587, Mary I of Scotland was executed for involvement in a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I of England. Before execution, Mary denied three times assisting the Babington Plot to murder her cousin, Queen Elizabeth, and crown Mary as ruler of Great Britain. Mary's guilt or innocence is debated to this day.

The Grisly, Botched Execution Of Mary, Queen Of Scots - Most beheadings in England were done without incident. Unfortunately for Mary, Queen of Scots, hers was not most.

Yet, even after two blows the royal head had still not been completely severed; the executioner was forced to swing again to cut the “one little gristle” attaching it to the body. He then lifted the bloody trophy up before the gathered witnesses and solemnly proclaimed “God Save the Queen.” Wynkfield gruesomely noted that the queen’s head was almost unrecognizable and that her lips remained moving for “a quarter of an hour” after her decapitation.

Actually, last Sunday, February 6th, marks the 70th anniversary of the death of King George VI, and the ascension to the throne of Queen Elizabeth II. There are many Platinum Jubilee celebrations occurring in the U.K. this year, but it must be strange to have such an important day in one's life coincide with the death of a much loved father.
