9/18/1863... opening day of the Battle of Chickamauga. The night before, Union troops could hear Confederate troops arriving by train at Catoosa Station.

ETA: The Chickamauga battlefield became the first Civil War National Military Park.

Thomas' stand on Horseshoe Ridge was a child favorite of mine.

It's interesting how much more well known the battles fought by Lee in VA and the surrounding area are even among people who aren't into history. The carnage at Chickamauga was some of the worst of the war. Then again, it wasn't decisive like Gettysburg.

I have been to Chickamauga twice. It's one of my favorites. 2 direct ancestors fought there as did Hood's Texas Brigade.

I'd like to go. It's a flight though. I have been to Gettysburg 3 times and Antietam (Sharpsburg to you lol) twice. Those two battlefields are only about an hour apart and I live in NJ. I prefer the actual battlefield at Antietam because 1) I find that battle more interesting and 2) it's a lot smaller and much easier to visualize when you're standing there. I can stand by Miller Cornfield, for example, and actually see the Sunken Lane.

Hood's Brigade was transferred to the Western Theater just prior to Chickamauga, IIRC? I know they fought at Antietam and Gettysburg.

Longstreet's Corps was transferred to Chickamauga for the fight there. It was them that the Union troops heard arriving by train at Catoosa Station the night of the 17th and in the wee hours of the morning on the 18th.

I am going to Harpers Ferry/South Mountain/Sharpsburg for the 1st time on 10/6-10/11. A friend is going too who has a direct ancestor in the 1st Texas Infantry who was wounded in Miller's Cornfield.

Have a good time! You have to check out Gettysburg. The town itself is awesome. It's very male oriented but you could spend a few days there.

September 27, 1864 The Battle of Marianna, Florida. I have been to Marianna twice. it's in the Florida panhandle and I had an uncle that lived about 15-20 minutes from there. They have a Civil War tour there. You can walk most of it. It's a short drive to the last couple sites. Local historian Dale Cox is the expert on the battle.

    Post September 27, 1998 - ESPN debuts 1st & 10 line

Yesterday September 27th marked 23 years since the debut of the majestic yellow first down line. Yes, there are a million reasons to hate on ESPN but this simple enhancement is something we all rely on each Saturday to help us criticize playcalling, officials and players so I give credit where credit is due.
