Earlier today I watched
The Outpost. On Netflix. It is about an American FOB in the bottom of a valley in the Hindu Kush which was suppose to block Taliban fighters from entering Afghanistan from Pakistan.
I have posted about the Battle of Kamdesh before several times.
First, whoever decided to put a fire base there should have been court-martialed. The firebase of course was surrounded by walls, but the mountains around it had numerous places from which the enemy could fire down directly into the firebase.
The commanding officers were all getting killed. The best, Captain Keating (the son of a famous general officer who often appears on FOX news) actually made peace with the local Afghans. He was killed in a dubious mission ordered by higher ups. The follow-on commanders created a rift with the locals Afghans who then decided to back the Taliban.
What happened next was a battle between 56 Americans and at least 400 Taliban. 7 US KIA. At least 27 WIA. Enemy KIA was listed as 180, but likely higher.
The Taliban breached the wire and the fight was to the death. Only Apache helicopters and a B1 Bomber saved the US forces from certain death.
Numerous awards for valor. And two Medals of Honor (living) and another Distinguished Service Cross (posthumous). The unit, 3-71st CAV, 10th MNT DIV became the most highly decorated unit in the Afghan war.
The movie is well worth the watch.
