It turned out that the woman was missing an eye and they replaced her glass eye with a grape.

Still...it's so disturbing to watch.

...but like all the other seemingly offensive things in movies, it's not real.

The movie is Un Chien Andalou. What they actually did was to cut very quickly from the woman's eye to that of a dead pig.

In the movie Syriana, and also in an episode of 'Lethal Weapon' and an episode of 'Mayans', someone being tortured had at least one fingernail pulled out. which was very graphically depicted. Just because the special effects people can do this kind of thing convincingly now doesn't mean they should.
