Gotta call it a day. I'll get back to you tomorrow.
My last thought is...what low wage jobs are you talking about?

    Oh, I was a clerk at a high-end men's store too.

    It still is a balance.

If you could get people for $2 an hour then automation would be removed in some cases and be replaced with people. If they do not have to spend capital and can get the same cost from humans then they would chose workers. That is why illegal workers are desired. Yes there are other factors here.

Companies do not want to import. They do it because if they do not then you will buy from a lower priced importer. They own the goods sitting in warehouses and on boats. If the product takes off then they cannot supply and if the product fails they have 6 months or more they have to pay for.

Some people, mostly progressives, can't wrap their minds around the idea that a renewable supply of cheap labor retards technological development. Both sides are guilty as sin in this. The motive on the right is greed. The motive on the left stems from the smug stupidity they always display on the issue of immigration.

A federal minimum wage of $15 is unworkable. I don't see how that could be implemented.

The left, politicians at least, see immigrants as cheap votes, and so you could say their greed is for power, the right's for wealth.

Elements of the Democratic Party do think that way but the attitudes I usually encounter I think are genuine.

Tremendous inflation and higher unemployment than they think. The loss of manufacturing would have a severe impact on our national defense. It is already in trouble as we ended the national reserves for materials that we need to manufacture in war time.

The same jobs that were available when I was in high school in the 60's, bagging groceries, flipping burgers, washing cars. However, more and more those jobs are going away because its cheaper and less trouble to automate them.
