Well, it looks like no one is interested in this question.
It was the 369th Regiment, AKA the Harlem Hellfighters. An all black regiment primarily from New York. The American Army didn't want to use them on the front lines so they gave them to the French. They engaged in more battles than any other group and were given the name "Hellfighters" by the Germans because of their ferocity in battle. One of its members was eventually given the Congressional Medal of Honor

And while they were treated like dirt by the United States the French weren't much better. In WW2 they used North African Troops with a promise of full French citizenship after the war. They never fulfilled that promise.
Truthfully, I have always wondered by African Americans would willingly join and fight for the US when they were not allowed to participate in the promises of the Founding Fathers.
