Here is a bit of news in regards to the people who keep claiming that it's all treated as a 'negative connation'. James Caldwell school kept their name and logo, against an out of towner who felt 'offended'. Has some personal meaning to me, as I grew up in that general area.

War, enmasse, drives industrialization. The Native Americans had no such pressure on them. They lived a simpler live that didn't require such activities.
War between "nations" was almost non-existent. Couple that with being isolated from the rest of the modern world, and you get total conquest by modern methods.

It was rare. Most native Americans were too busy for wars.
Wars are usually based on holding territory and/or acquiring more territory to settle. Native Americans had no such philosophy about real estate. And it was hard to offend an entire Indian Nation.
They took no prisoners because they knew they couldn't feed them, Of course thee was an exception to rules. Sometimes women were taken to replace those lost during raids or other natural causes.
Now, I'm talking about those on the North American and not those from South or Central America: Aztec, Incas, and Mayans. Those were central states and more likely to go to war with neighboring *states* for resources: Slaves and food. Some were used for sacrifice only. But they too were consumed by European tactics.
The plains Indians were nomadic and simply moved to keep their tribes alive and well fed.
A central State for them was the total area west of the Mississippi. They didn't fight over real estate because they actually believed that no one "owned" the land. If there were conflicts, it was usually of a personal nature and not political.
I had four semester of North American Indian history as part of my minor of anthro.
