Post Today is Bar Day - Day One!!!

Today is the day that law grads take the Bar in Ohio. The ones that either didn't take it in July or flunked it after taking it in July. We have two first timers here today in our office taking the Bar. One - a grad that will work here after he passes; and the other my youngest's best friend that wanted use of our stable fiber internet connection.

They are taking it online in Ohio b/c of Covid. Apparently, the camera on the laptop will watch them all day. I took it in July 1987 at the Memorial Coliseum in Columbus.

I took the Texas Bar in July 1998. 2.5 days in a big hall like above in a suburb of Houston. I believe it was in November that we got our letter in the mail. A thin letter was good news. I got the thin letter.

We were three days, the last MTW in July. Always the same three days. I couldn't afford a decent hotel, so my buddy and I shared a fleabag hooker haven within walking distance to Memorial Hall. Mrs. U (then, just Pammy) gave me her credit card and said to get a bite to eat after the first night - we went to the Spaghetti Warehouse which was across the street from the hall. Otherwise, we'd taken a dorm fridge of cold cuts, bread, milk, juice etc.

The results came out in late October. I tried to get stinking drunk the night before, but couldn't. You could start calling at 8:00 - this was all pre-internet. If you were in the book, you passed. If not, you flunked. Of course, it was busy..... everybody calling.... busy..... All they said was "you're in there" or "Not in there" I think. I never got through until later that day but one of the guys I worked with called me and had gotten through:

    "You're in there baby"

A few weeks later, you got the written letter. I still have that letter.

For the bar exam I stayed at a motel near the conference center. Lots of friends from Tulane were staying in the same place.

I lived in Houston for three months to study for the bar. At one point I was in a crappy hooker hotel. I talked to one girl a lot. We sat outside and talked in the early evenings. Once she offered to give me a "freebee," and I declined. Luckily my neighbors back home had a house in Houston and the renter left. Once that was open they let me stay there the rest of my time.

I talked to the buddy that I shared a room with last night. We can both now afford a decent hotel room. We laughed about dragging that dorm fridge from Cleveland to Columbus. I went to Case Western Reserve University for law school. The University was having a huge post-bar party. We wanted none of that. Instead, we hopped in the car, got a 6-pack and drove north.

We had a small get together after the exam- it was a small group of Tulane students who took the Texas bar. I didn't stay too long. Was driving back to New Orleans the next day.

But I basically lived on my credit card for those three months. I did also get a small student loan for the purpose.

Just what the world needs... more lawyers.

Just kidding guys. I consider a privilege to "know" you both (as much as you can in this format, anyway). It is a difficult accomplishment and one to wear with pride.
