Of course because the Pentagon wants a cleen sheet fighter to replace the F-16s. That which the F-35 was never intended to do. Must mean its due to the problems the F-35 had.

Despite the Israelis using the F-35 and flying all over Iran with their new Russian Radar and never knowing they were there until as they were leaving Iranian Airspace.

Frustration with Lockheed Martin’s fifth-generation stealth jet flooded Twitter on Wednesday, after Forbes magazine published a story about how USAF commissioning a study into a new, cheaper and lighter fighter amounts to “a tacit admission that the F-35 has failed.”........“We could have used this cash to cancel student loans for every person in America,” lamented the liberal watchdog Public Citizen, pointing to the F-35 program’s estimated $1.7 trillion lifetime cost. For that kind of money, “we could have completely replaced America's water infrastructure,” said environmentalist advocate Erin Brockovich. “That's enough to house all homeless people in the United States 28 times over,”tweeted Robert Reich, Labor secretary in the Clinton administration......https://www.rt.com/usa/516507-f35-fa...rce-reactions/
This problem is not anything new. As a new fighter is proposed, all sorts of military from various branches start adding their wish list to it that was never proposed in the first place. Every change means a change to the aircraft and any change to an aircraft often means a redesign.

    For instance:

There’s a small-wing version for land-based operations, a big-wing version for the Navy’s catapult-equipped aircraft carriers and, for the small-deck assault ships the Marines ride in, a vertical-landing model with a downward-blasting lift engine.
When Donald Trump said to protest “peacefully”, he meant violence.

When he told protesters to “go home”, he meant stay for an insurrection.

And when he told Brad Raffensperger to implement “whatever the correct legal remedy is”, he meant fraud.

    War is peace.

    Freedom is slavery.

    Ignorance is strength.

The F-35 is a great plane, and like all major combat systems has cost overruns and bugs to fix.

For sure! You'll take it all day, every day. It's what you do.

What? That never happened and could happen unless they were willing to end the entire program.

One reason why the Russians are trying to match us using the F35 with drones in the same airspace. You know because the F35 has all those problems that we want the rest of our enemies to know about. LOL

Still, it works.....as Ivan Mao always takes the bait.
