Samurai originally meant servant. They emerged as a military force just as the gun appeared in Japan as a weapon--which ultimately defeated the use of samurai. I didn't know before that Buddhist at this time were a powerful military and political force--defeated in 1571 by warlord Oda Nobunaga.
