This is not as surprising as you might think.

A lot of musical groups got taken for a ride in the 60's and 70's not caring about economics or property like who owned their music. By the 80's they started to wake up and hire their own lawyers and financial managers.

About a year ago I was watching a program that featured the Ozbourne's. And Sharon starts talking about how much she liked their old home in Birmingham, and Ozzy says on camera "You want to move back there and pay those Taxes!"

He favored limited government and low taxes; he also stated that he approved of national defense, social security, and other federal programs, but only if recipients of such programs are willing and able to pay for them.

He favored capitalism, entrepreneurship, and independent business, stating that musicians could make more from owning their own businesses than from collecting royalties.

He opposed communism, stating, "A system that doesn't allow ownership ... has—to put it mildly—a fatal design flaw."

This segment features Frank dissecting democracy. He reveals that 1 man 1 vote can be manipulated by the control of information that each voter receives. The information is controlled by the education system and the media. The media is controlled by corporations. Frank shows prescience in describing what was the Obama campaign's masterful manipulation of the media
Zappa was a very cool dude. His politics mirrored my own. What's funny is the right always saw him as demented and drug using. He never drank or did drugs. The back of his Sheik Your Booty (1978) album shows a mixing board with a pack of Winstons: one burning and a cup of black coffee.

He was a brilliant man and he had a great handle on society's problems that came out in his music. There are lost of YouTube interviews and the ones on labeling albums for sale are quite interesting: the far right never give him a chance: they treat like a commie leftie.

Addendum: watch the video interview and listen to what he says about the Republican party and the Communist party.

Frank was an odd duck but a brilliant one. As far as his politics go he was more than anything else very distrustful of government in general regardless of the party in charge.
