I had an employee once who normally was very quiet, just doing her work and not engaging the other staff. One day I came in and she was glad handing everyone and was quite gregarious. Someone told me to watch her the next time she went down the hall to the restroom. She wobbled down the hall, hitting both sides. I checked her water bottle and found it to be mostly vodka. Since she was a temp I called the agency and said come get her, I can't let her stay nor can I just put her out on the street. It was heartbreaking really since she, when sober, was quite a hard worker, but that was that.
The few times I have been a public speaker I just spoke off the cuff, didn't even have notes. I would give speeches to a trade organization I belonged to and pretend I was reading off a written speech. About half way through I would say, Well, I don't really like what else I have written so ...and I would just throw away the paper I had in my hand and keep on with the speech. I am not sure I could be as quick with the comebacks today as I was 20 years ago but I do not need a teleprompter.
