    To Live is to Suffer

Early this morning I was listening to an old Buddhist podcast, or maybe it was a book excerpt. The narrator ran through a list of things in our lives that most people see as suffering then drew his conclusion that to live is to suffer.

That seemed so alien to me. I love my life and look forward to every minute of it. I don't sense suffering, at least not all that much in my own life. Do people generally agree that to live is to suffer?

I agree with you. Life is to be lived. You learn from every experience good or bad. Your reaction to it all is what makes you you.

I was listening to a podcast this morning and it was about achieving in life regardless of circumstances. A caller called in and crapped on the entire thesis claiming that he didn't choose to be born, choose his parents, race, etc. and his life sucked and nobody should assume that they can achieve at anything.

I thought, oh boy, that guy is too negative to even engage with.

Notwithstanding actual physical pain, most suffering is caused by stress, anxiety and dissatisfaction - worrying about things that you cannot change; trying to hold on to things that are constantly changing; holding unreasonable expectations and not accepting reality.
In quoting my post, you affirm and agree that you have not been goaded, provoked, emotionally manipulated or otherwise coerced into responding.

I have never accepted reality. Maybe that is why I love living so much.

I accept reality and my responses to it even if my responses are poor. I learn from it.

I don't understand depression personally, so I can't relate to those who are depressed.

This is a true story. I have omitted most of it.

An Officer, Army if I have remembered correctly, once asked me, "Major...why are you always so goddamn happy?"

"Well, sir, my doctor thinks it is because of a chemical imbalance. She is looking for a medicine that will relieve my symptoms."

That was either a colonel or a Navy captain.

Funny. I have been lucky with military leadership in my time, but I did have a couple of "Debbie downer" types.

I would hate to be in a targeting cell working for someone like that.

It was during my airborne command post days. We were standing alert at Hickam Air Force Base. I was the intelligence officer (INTELLO) for the team.
