Post How are mods selected and retired here?

I'm fairly new here, but not to forums overall. I understand that a mod left here under bad circumstances and it got me curious: how are mods selected here? how are mods retired? How does someone or a group of someones get a mod retired or at least start the discussion? Do the members vote? Is it the voice behind the curtain?

Please remember - this is not a pick on a particular mod thread - I am asking generally. This is a tpf thread and I will ask that you be banned if you make this about any particular mods.

In the past, I believe members were asked by the then-current Mod team if they'd agree to serve as a Moderator. I'm assuming that they took an internal vote on that before asking, and also that Admin had some input.

Yes, how it worked. It kicks off with discussion of needing to add someone, nominations are considered, those remaining are asked based on vote of mods and admin. Once they accept they're trained up--or used to be.

Mods can step down voluntarily. Or they can be removed but only after much heated debate.

I believe there is a nominating process. Once in evening wear and once in swimwear. it's rather rigorous.

Personally, if the mods leave politics out of their decisions, don't pick sides, then the political position of any candidate can be ignored. Mods could all lean one way and as long as they stick to moderating forum behavior and do their best, politics won't matter.

But politics does enter into picking nominees because they lately try to balance things politically and bypass good candidates because of their politics.

I would add that Admin has the final say. He works closely with the mods, so that is his right.
