Actually no, China has not. China uses a very low poverty line. The average annual earnings in China is below the US poverty line for an individual.

This is when you scream cost of living but then you have to explain currency exchange rates and how China manipulates them.

Of course we do know that China has made strides but only by using capitalist style market techniques and while depending on capitalist countries to buy their under priced exports based on deflated currency.

In Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) China ranks 73rd. That is third world status. This meshes with what I have long said: China is two nations- one wealthy- along the coast and major rivers. And one very poor- the rest of the nation.
Mathematical hogwash . The picture you want to paint is determined by how you use the numbers .......for instance , subtract the US one-percenters out of the equation , and America is a third world country......and the trend is not heading in a positive direction.

Not based on per capita GDP or purchasing power parity.

Take out the one-percenters and the billionaire class and your PPP drops through the floor boards. What percentage rely on food stamps , welfare and current wage stimulus ? China's population is almost 5 times the US , so what they've done and continue to do , impresses me - you can please yourself .

No it doesn't. In fact in the US, the middle class spends far more on goods and services that the rich. Even our poor spends more on goods and services than most other nations' poor.

    Comparing Nations' Purchasing Power Parity

To make a meaningful comparison of prices across countries, a wide range of goods and services must be considered. However, this one-to-one comparison is difficult to achieve due to the sheer amount of data that must be collected and the complexity of the comparisons that must be drawn. To help facilitate this comparison, the University of Pennsylvania and the United Nations joined forces to establish the International Comparison Program (ICP) in 1968.1

With this program, the PPPs generated by the ICP have a basis from a worldwide price survey that compares the prices of hundreds of various goods and services. The program helps international macroeconomists estimate global productivity and growth.2

Every few years, the World Bank releases a report that compares the productivity and growth of various countries in terms of PPP and U.S. dollars.3 Both the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) use weights based on PPP metrics to make predictions and recommend economic policy.4 The recommended economic policies can have an immediate short-term impact on financial markets.

Also, some forex traders use PPP to find potentially overvalued or undervalued currencies. Investors who hold stock or bonds of foreign companies may use the survey's PPP figures to predict the impact of exchange-rate fluctuations on a country's economy, and thus the impact on their investment.
