My assumption on topic differs, I find American conservatives full of hate, much involves change or the other - seen as an enemy. The sky is always falling for the conservative. Divisiveness fuels the right, you see that in the hatred of some of the new congress women for instance. It appears to be a personality difference. Liberals are open, Conservatives closed. Lots of studies on that assumption or fact? This history convers the topic well.

"With engaging wit and subtle irony, Albert Hirschman maps the diffuse and treacherous world of reactionary rhetoric in which conservative public figures, thinkers, and polemicists have been arguing against progressive agendas and reforms for the past two hundred years.

"Hirschman draws his examples from three successive waves of reactive thought that arose in response to the liberal ideas of the French Revolution and the Declaration of the Rights of Man, to democratization and the drive toward universal suffrage in the nineteenth century, and to the welfare state in our own century. In each case he identifies three principal arguments invariably used: (1) the perversity thesis, whereby any action to improve some feature of the political, social, or economic order is alleged to result in the exact opposite of what was intended; (2) the futility thesis, which predicts that attempts at social transformation will produce no effects whatever—will simply be incapable of making a dent in the status quo; (3) the jeopardy thesis, holding that the cost of the proposed reform is unacceptable because it will endanger previous hard-won accomplishments. He illustrates these propositions by citing writers across the centuries from Alexis de Tocqueville to George Stigler, Herbert Spencer to Jay Forrester, Edmund Burke to Charles Murray. Finally, in a lightning turnabout, he shows that progressives are frequently apt to employ closely related rhetorical postures, which are as biased as their reactionary counterparts. For those who aspire to the genuine dialogue that characterizes a truly democratic society, Hirschman points out that both types of rhetoric function, in effect, as contraptions designed to make debate impossible. In the process, his book makes an original contribution to democratic thought."

To an extent we are being driven from both "sides" to hate, distrust and not believe each other. I have long railed against divisionism, tribalism whatever you want to call it. The only people who are better off under this divided system are the swamp critters on both "sides".
This stuff is why we can't get together to push them to make laws most of us believe in like term limits, campaign financing controls, etc.
As far as the futility thesis I think there is a great deal of real world evidence that government is highly ineffieicent and expensive. For example Medicare which I myself will depend upon fueled massive price increases to the point where it is arguable that a modern Medicare Recipent without a supplement is better off then their great grandparents were with no health insurance. Another example had my wife and I invested 7 plus percent of every dollar we ever made we would be so much better off than we will be under the poorly managed SS/Medicare system.
We have thrown money at poverty without demanding personal responsibility for 60 years and we have more poverty than ever. I could go on but much of the critism of social service programs is based upon their inability to reduce the need for themselves.
None of that means that I don't believe in social programs, hands up and saftey nets.I do believe in those things run at the state level.

Hate and race. When one bases their whole mental attitude on that it is not pretty. You have seen the results all across the country with people killed, buildings looted and burned, and pure vitriol.
When Donald Trump said to protest “peacefully”, he meant violence.

When he told protesters to “go home”, he meant stay for an insurrection.

And when he told Brad Raffensperger to implement “whatever the correct legal remedy is”, he meant fraud.

There’s the proof that conservatives are far more angry and irrational than any other group in politics.

Ah yes, jobs, low taxes, low fuel prices are all a terrible idea for the completely nutty progressive left.
