The Soviet TV version of Lord of the Rings rediscovered after 30 years...

A Soviet television adaptation of The Lord of the Rings thought to have been lost to time was rediscovered and posted on YouTube last week, delighting Russian-language fans of JRR Tolkien. The 1991 made-for-TV film, Khraniteli, based on Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, is the only adaptation of his Lord of the Rings trilogy believed to have been made in the Soviet Union. Aired 10 years before the release of the first instalment of Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy, the low-budget film appears ripped from another age: the costumes and sets are rudimentary, the special effects are ludicrous, and many of the scenes look more like a theatre production than a feature-length film.

The score, composed by Andrei Romanov of the rock band Akvarium, also lends a distinctly Soviet ambience to the production, which was reportedly aired just once on television before disappearing into the archives of Leningrad Television. Few knew about its existence until Leningrad Television’s successor, 5TV, abruptly posted the film to YouTube last week [part one | part two], where it has gained more than 800,000 views within several days.

My son is a huge foreign film buff, and I once decided to test his tolerance by giving him a copy of a horrendous Soviet sci-fi film from the '50s or early '60s, name forgotten, and see if he would/could watch it in its 3- or 4-hour entirety. (I only got through about the first forty minutes.) It was in black-and- white and was supposed to be about some scientists from Earth who were studying the culture of this planet, the level of cultural development of which appeared to be medieval at best. The movie - the part of it that I watched - consisted mostly of people trudging through or falling down and rolling around in the mud, shouting insults at one another, and occasionally grinning into the camera. It was very badly and sporadically subtitled in English, but the words made no sense whatever. I'm going to have to ask him whether he ever got around to trying to watch that thing.

@countryboy Thanks. I deleted it. I wonder how that happened.

Took me a minute to figure out it wasn't just a commercial.

I easily found the Soviet adaptation. My first thought was, no wonder their evil empire didn't survive. It's unwatchable.
