Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect. -- Woody Hayes

Yes if we can phase out Fossil fuels it would be great, but it has to be economical, so far alternatives are not. Most importantly it must be made with the ability to surge when demand increases, Currently Hydro can do that, Fossil Fuels and Nuclear can do that even better. The current Green Techs have no surge capability, they are on or off and are dependent on non controllable factors. If demand goes up they do not have the ability to increase generation, with wind power you can not even guarantee that you can produce base level power from day to day let alone surge power. It is estimated that to fully "Electrify the US" it would take a 90% increase in the amount of electricity Generated by 2050. To achive that you would not only have to increase 90% but also replace 60% of existing. Currently the US increase in power production is about 2.5% per year. Then if you look at the grid expansion you are looking at another monumental task.
Green energy is a great idea, but until we have a revolutionary battery Tech increase and an equally revolutionary Solar Tech increase Green energy is not viable. Solar cells currently are only 11-15% efficient while a modern Nat gas plant is 60%.
