I don't really know, of personal knowledge, just what Minnesota law is, in this instance. But Google says the following:
"In Minnesota, the charge of first-degree murder brings with it the penalty of life in prison. Second-degree murder can be punished by up to 40 years in prison." (Bold in original)
Even so, it is my understanding that "life," in Minnesota, means that a person must serve 30 years before becoming eligible for parole (and there is, of course, no guarantee of its materializing then).

Second degree murder in Minnesota is intentional and includes felony murder- where your commission of a felony causes the death of another. The fentanyl breaks the chain between any felony assault and Floyd's death.
