A woman called animal control on a croissant...

Chances are, at one point or another, your wily mind has played a trick on you. It is, unfortunately, part of the human experience. Sometimes you awake in a cold sweat in the middle of the night, convinced that the shadow in the corner your bedroom is actually a demon; in another instance, you might mistake a stranger on the subway for an ex you’d rather not see.

This sort ofmind trickery recently befell a woman in Krakow, Poland — a woman who called animal control on a croissant. Though, of course, she didn’t know it was a croissant at the time. When she made the call to Krakow Animal Welfare Society, she told them that a menacing creature had been lurking in a lilac tree outside her home for two to three days. She thought it resembled an iguana, but wasn’t sure. But its species was irrelevant. “People aren’t opening their windows because they’re afraid it will go into their house,” the woman told the officers, according to a dramatic Facebook post from the Welfare Society.

They can't have many birds or squirrels in that area of Krakow or that croissant would have been consumed on day 1.

I like the one about the woman who had just gotten into her car after grocery shopping when she heard a small explosion and thought she'd been shot in the head. She was afraid to lift her head off of the headrest because she felt what she assumed was her brains leaking out and running down her neck. It turns out that a roll of biscuit dough in a bag in her back seat had exploded in the heat and part of it had impacted the back of her head.

I know several women, some with grown children who still are afraid to twist open those tubes.

I knew a woman - okay, it was my late mother - who was concerned about her microwave not working properly because "you have to be very careful around anything nuclear".

She was also worried about eating some frozen orange slices that my father brought home because they'd been grown in Hiroshima. (This was in the early '70s.)
