    Broccoli advice

So, I planted broccoli again because 1) I eat a lot of cruciferous vegetables and 2) I got a pretty good yield last season. I had one problem though. It all happens so quickly. Before I know it I have multiple crowns maturing within days of each other. I read that you should cut off the crown soon after it matures. It will rapidly decline in quality and this jived with my experience. It's not like leaving a pepper to ripen. I had a lot of broccoli I had to consume in a short period of time. Has anyone else encountered the same or a similar problem?

I also planted some artwork broccoli which regenerated smaller shoots for 6-8 weeks after I cut off the initial crowns. I did that this year too but I like the regular broccoli crowns were all used to. Maybe I could hang on the seedlings for a bit? Maybe stagger the plantings?

No, but what you can do with all that broccoli is clean it and break it down into florets and pieces of the stems, toss them in boiling water for about 2 minutes to blanche them, and then freeze them. Full instructions here: https://www.thespruceeats.com/blanch...occoli-1327651

They retain most of their vitamins as well as color and you don't have to OD on broccoli.

Planted broccoli. Came out and only had stalks. Dang rabbits. At least they were well fed.
When Donald Trump said to protest “peacefully”, he meant violence.

When he told protesters to “go home”, he meant stay for an insurrection.

And when he told Brad Raffensperger to implement “whatever the correct legal remedy is”, he meant fraud.

Staggering the plantings certainly helps as they'll ripen at different intervals. It's probably easier if you can plant different varieties all at once which will mature at different times but if you've got the time I've always found that staggering works well and it suits me.

If all else fails make lots of broccoli and cheese soup and freeze it. It's awesome.

I believe that broc-coli is a type of bacteria, closely related to e-coli; so I altogether eschew it...

My ideas were covered above. Stagger planting and/or freeze as described above.

The thing about frozen broccoli is the texture. Some vegetables freeze well (e.g. peas and carrots). Some don't. I prefer a noticeable crunch to my vegetation. Frozen broccoli is too soft. It is better than wasting it though Also, I guess I could make a cream of broccoli type soup out of it. A lower fat version of course. Pureeing the frozen florets would solve the texture issue.

I may pick up a few more seedlings in a few weeks. The stuff I have out there now is looking great.
