On my Nana's grave if she saw this crap..........She would have beat our asses if we carried a handbag or played with dolls. One time my big brother Sal came home with pink tie on and she ripped off his neck. I am glad she raised us to be men

Before pockets became commonplace in men's clothing, men used to carry "purses" to hold their coins, as did women. With the advent of pants with pockets, men stopped carrying purses for their coins and with the development of paper currency, they started carrying wallets or billfolds, which they put in their pockets. Women's clothing rarely contained any kind of substantial pockets (and still doesn't), thus women continued to carry some sort of bag to hold their money, keys, handkerchief etc.. However, anytime men had to carry anything that would not fit in a pocket, they carried a bag. That bag was either a brief case, or some sort of messenger bag.

While the need for a handbag to hold coins or currency is waning, even for women, the need for a bag to hold cellphones and other media devices increases. People get hung up on the idea that a bag is somehow inherently effeminate because the fashion industry developed handbags for women for many years. A handbag is nothing more than a bag to hold whatever you can't put in your pockets. If the design is not feminine, then it won't look effeminate if a man carries it.

    Wrong!

Historically men had belt pouches of various sizes and types before pants pockets. Men who had to work or otherwise fight with weapons did not drag around purses or handbags.

Exactly, a "coin purse" was a belt pouch, and nothing akin to the purses of today.

Not wrong. It was still called a purse, even if it hung from a belt. Did you never watch Robin Hood or any swashbuckler movies? In fact, coin purses, as they are still called, is neither a masculine or feminine term as there are both men's and women's coin purses.

You said men used to "carry" purses and that was not the same as today's casual Man Handbags as you implied so I corrected. I am well aware that "purse" did not have the same feminine meaning as today.

I accept your history as granted, but hardly the same as Harry's handbag in the video clip.

This is what a very rich man wears while other people carry most of his $#@!!

Forget Harry. He's hardly going to influence any significant number of men to carry ladies' handbags. Those that would carry them, already do.

My only point is that men should get over the idea that a handbag is an inherently female thing. Even the term handbag originates with hand-held luggage bags usually carried by men.

Guess what, the modern version of those original men's purses is called a fanny pack. LOL.
