Recall that sometime after the repeal of the oppressive Stamp Act the British tried a moderate Tax on low cost tea because the East India company had a great crop season and wholesale prices were coming down. Not a bad deal economically, but the founders understood this as another taxation "foot in the door" that led to the Boston Tea Party!
