I said the store makes copies off of a master provided by the chain. That is why they have x number of copies to rent. The chain does not provide all of those dvd's or movies. They are ripped from head stock. They are granted permission to copy from head stock by the distributors. That is not piracy, but it should be considered as such, in the finest sense of the word.
Do try to keep up. Nothing was mentioned about the suspect duplicating anything.
What you said was: "I would argue that the tape in question was ripped from an original, therefore reducing the dollar measure of the claim."
Nothing was said about master copies and grants for copying from head stock. I wasn't aware that video shops were licensed to make copies, since every tape that I ever rented appeared to be an original, not a copy.

You don't think that they keep 20 originals in stock for rental, do you? How many movies is in a store? Now think of how much space it takes up to even store multiple originals to keep up with the consumption. It there are over 5 hundred movies in a small store, they would have to find a space to keep them. A small two car garage might be great storage.
This is such small potatoes...........and they are treating almost as seriously as a murder.

Heck, even most rented dvd's are ripped for rent.

The story strikes me as a good example of manufactured outrage.

Am seeing no evidence that the federal prosecutors are pursuing any charges. And pretty doubtful that they have any intention in the future.

A 20 year old charge never got eradicated from the books and it popped up when the woman was going through the procedure of a legal name change. So the media seems to have latched on to concept that she "could be prosecuted!" for this old VHS tape return. Sort of falls under the category of "click bait".

You do know those stores write these things off. It's called insurance.
What probably occurred was that the insurance wasn't going to cover a 3 dollar tape as stolen.
If they insurance company and DID pay the claim, this phase is null, as restitution had already been provided.
Now, it's just a witch hunt and looks like someone is looking to score points with the voters.
Which brings up another point. Do you think the public general gives a damn?
The only reason that this came up is because the woman tried to change her name on her license in Texas. That probably automatically involves some kind of multi-state search for pending charges. As I said, once charges are laid, until they are either adjudicated or withdrawn, they stay on the books, which today means a computer database. It's not a witch hunt. No one was looking for her, nor was it political. The search simply flagged the outstanding charge and warrant. It's only newsworthy because it involves something as trivial as a VHS tape that's 21 years overdue and someone gave the story to the press. Since the business has since closed, leaving no one to whom restitution is due, Cleveland County could decline to prosecute. Stay tuned to the OK news for updates. LOL.

This is not a murder charge, but it seems like OK is handling it that way.

The charge is likely over the amount of the penalties not paid- late fees. The sol wouldn't start if the penalties continue to run.

I figured the warrant would have expired by now.

Then I can't believe the video store would still be in business, so would the complaint still be valid if the entity was dissolved?

Third try. Sure I returned it! I gave it to the young guy that was working there.

First thing I'd request are business records from that time period, a full accounting that shows she's still liable.
Then, I'd take statements from the old owners, if that's possible, and see if they even remember such a claim.
Someone is being an ass..........the prosecutor may get shamed for even bringing this up.
