It's not a benefit, as they've taken nearly 15% of my earnings (1/2 from me and 1/2 from my employer) the entire time I've been working (up to the annual cap). I haven't been able to invest it - and I've had to put a percentage away - most recently 20% (up to the annual cap) each and every year of my entire professional life - to live off the earnings. How is it a benefit. At best, it should have been an annuity - but Mordor squandered it. So, on all the money I put in there, I'm going to get some paltry sum that doesn't even come close to what I could've gotten had I invested it in TFMB's.

Because it's not voluntary. There should be a way to opt out and invest the monies as you see fit.

I see some benefit, but only because we would be supporting 1/2 of the country who would never put away a dime. They would just put everyone on disability and fund it through the general fund.
Otherwise I find the entire process to be the worst investment you are forced to make.
