The south remained solidly in the Democratic camp well into the 1990s. The south continued to elect Democratic majorities to the House and Senate for another 3 decades after the passage of the CRA.

The loyalties of the south changed with the Civil Rights Act and then again when Reagan gave voice to the evangelicals.
