Israeli Court Delays Expulsion of Palestinian Families in East Jerusalem

The threat to evict six families from the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah had become a rallying cry for Palestinians.

The Israeli Supreme Court delayed on Sunday a decision on whether to expel six Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem after the attorney general requested more time, in part because of the tensions the case has stirred.

The court was to decide on Monday whether to uphold an expulsion order for the families in the Palestinian neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah in East Jerusalem, in a hearing that many feared would set off a wave of unrest. Instead, the case was delayed by up to 30 days to allow the attorney general, Avichai Mandelblit, to review it.

For many Palestinians, the families’ plight has become emblematic of a wider effort to remove Palestinians from parts of East Jerusalem and of the past displacements of Arabs in the occupied territories and within Israel.

The Israeli government has argued that the Sheikh Jarrah case was a private real-estate dispute between the Palestinian families and a secretive Jewish settler group. Two decades ago, the settler group bought the land on which the Palestinians’ homes were built in the 1950s.

But the attorney general’s intervention signaled that the case had become a political and diplomatic liability for Israel — prompting a wave of outrage, not just from Palestinians, but from American politicians and European and Arab capitals......snip~

    Not really.

"Up until this time, approximately 480 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip at Israeli territory, and approximately 150 rockets were fired at Israeli territory and exploded within Gaza Strip,” the Israeli Air Force announced Tuesday. “The Iron Dome Air Defense System has intercepted 200 of them.”

That tally leaves roughly 130 rockets exploded outside of the Gaza Strip but not intercepted by Iron Dome, with two Israeli women killed thus far. The eruption of violence, which reportedly includes the first rocket attack targeting Jerusalem since 2014, has tested the limits of Israel’s vaunted defenses as Hamas attempts to penetrate the Iron Dome system through dint of numbers......snip~

Maybe Joe will appoint Harris to oversee a peace deal. She's absolutely killing it on the non crisis at the border.

I do not believe Iron Dome as a system intercepts every inbound rocket. I wouldn't. Interceptors are expensive and limited in numbers. Any rocket predicted to "miss" should be passed through without intercept.

That hasn’t happened yet. They are considering evicting certain people as the land and home was owned by Jews who previously had it taken from them.

I would say Netanyahoo is behind the current troubles to avoid being thrown out of office . He has declared a state of emergency this morning.....how timely of him . In any case , the main problem happening in Israel is the social upheaval , with people rioting in the streets . Some say Israel is on the verge of civil war , unless Netanyahoo steps down .

I notice you're not including that these properties were stolen from Jews by the Jordanians, and this has been adjudicated in the very liberal Israeli court system for decades.

No, it wasn’t that I’m aware of. The Palestinians were allowed into the neighborhood, they’ve been there a couple of generations, a land deal was cut without their knowledge and all of a sudden they face eviction.

So it’s not right and Israel’s hard line is bringing all this on.
