That may have created the problem . I went to the bank to get the Boss man cash for the job and I got back home and 4 South Americans are eating their lunch on the lawn so I gave them a teaspoon of garden hose water to refresh each one and told them they'll be some cold brews when they finished . They knocked down the tree and did a great job cleaning up so I threw out a 12pk of PBRs . Problem was that one of em was the stump grinder guy and that wasn't done yet .

actually if you place a small quantity in your drilled holes, there is more than likely zero chance it will get into your water. Remember, it filters down until it become inert. Don't coat it, just place it in the holes you've already drilled.

For sure if you can't use anything toxic, go with epsom salts or with blood meal, which is high in nitrogen and will speed the decay. I totally get the problem of it being near the street.

I drilled about 15 -11/2 " holes so I'm going to try all of the above tomorrow morning . The chemical way (as long as it doesn't reach ground water ) along with the salt should decay it in a 2 or 3 year period . I can deal with that and put up with the mushroom clumps that I know are going to come up from the rotting wood . Ill hit it with the chainsaw and if lucky the main root wont be too deep . The last time I did this I had taken down 5 big trees in the front and since it was such a mess ,I had my son with his backhoe just rip up the roots and I replanted the whole lawn . This tree was one of the 2 that I left for shade .

I would shy away from the chemical solutions for fear of having that leak into the lawn. Call the tree guys back and have them do a better job. If not I think drilling holes is your best bet.

I cut down a tree a while back and called a guy to grind the stump. He came out and drilled some holes in the stump and poured some swill into it. He said that had to work for a week before he grind the stump as shooters will pop up eventually.

once the shooters pop up, you need to dig them out.

If your neighbors will not get upset then just burn it. Put some fuel in the holes and lite it up. If you want to make it burn easier than you can put some old oil or kerosene in the holes a few days before and let it soak in. I have burned up a few stumps this way. Live oaks (boring beetles), palm trees and a eucalyptus tree (too cold of a winter). The palms were soft but they make a mess out of the chain saws because it is like trying to cut rolls of string. If you can drill side holes on a angle down, to meet the holes from the top then you get air flow.

@Daily Bread You might consider filling the bored holes with this product?

Thanks for that help @jigglepete but I went with the Epsom salt and potassium nitrate . I also cut down into as many roots as possible and a few bags of lime on it before covering it with topsoil . Its not showing but as it decays in 2-3 years ill have to put more soil on it . I should get a box of termites to help me out lol.
