Cool Roommates, PayPal fraud, and the unconventional story behind Palantir

Roommates, PayPal fraud, and the unconventional story behind Palantir

Today, Palantir helps governments fight terrorism and businesses organize their data. It wouldn’t exist without PayPal.

When your clients include the CIA, NSA, FBI, and a bunch of other folks on that level, it’s safe to say you’ve built something noteworthy. Yesterday, lucrative software firm Palantir reported $341m in Q1 revenue (+49% YoY).
But without 2 dudes rooming together in law school, Palantir would likely never have existed.

Wall Street has never seen a company like Palantir before. Part software company, part consultancy, with a controversial dependence on US government and military work, Palantir only has 125 customers and remains heavily lossmaking after 17 years in business.

Palantir Technologies is a public American software company that specializes in big data analytics. Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, it was founded by Peter Thiel,[5] Nathan Gettings, Joe Lonsdale, Stephen Cohen, and Alex Karp in 2003. The company's name is derived from The Lord of the Rings where the magical palantíri were "seeing-stones," described as indestructible balls of crystal used for communication and to see events in other parts of the world.
The company is known for three projects in particular: Palantir Gotham, Palantir Metropolis, and Palantir Foundry. Palantir Gotham is used by counter-terrorism analysts at offices in the United States Intelligence Community (USIC) and United States Department of Defense.[6] In the past, Gotham was used by fraud investigators at the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, a former US federal agency which operated from 2009 to 2015. Gotham was also used by cyber analysts at Information Warfare Monitor, a Canadian public-private venture which operated from 2003 to 2012. Palantir Metropolis is used by hedge funds, banks, and financial services firms.[7][8] Palantir Foundry is used by corporate clients such as Morgan Stanley, Merck KGaA, Airbus, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV

At PayPal, Thiel dealt with rampant fraud that at one point made up 1%+ of PayPal’s total volume.
Thiel & Co. refocused the company around building tools to help humans track internet fraudsters, and PayPal was sold in 2002.

EBay and PayPal actually parted ways operationally in 2015, and eBay has recently stopped using PayPal as its primary money processing mechanism. Sometime this year they'll be switching to something called Adyen, if they haven't done so already, and will stop dealing with PayPal altogether.

That was also about the time Paypal began ramping up Fees and putting out new User Agreements most people won't read that work in their favor. Both companies are nothing but money making software that work fine until you have a serious problem and good luck getting that resolved in your favor.

I hardly use either anymore although Paypal is still convenient at times for small purchases online.
