How can the left's constant shifting to the left be suddenly significant?

That mix in the middle represents political stability. Once it disappears, the system falls apart.

I don't think that is what happen. Rather the rise of the progressive movement in the US (again). They are illiberal and tend towards authoritarianism. Millennials make up most of this shift.

The leftward lurch represents a transition from liberalism to progressivism (of part of the party).

If the center disappears there will be no incentive to compromise, no neutral arbiters - the democratic process fails. Expurgating all but the extreme wings of each party guarantees that neither side will compromise and that those voters who are affiliated with the party with the least votes will be ignored because no one will be catering to the national interests but only to partisan interests. It's not the people who are fundamentally changing, it's the parties that are both becoming more extreme and intractable and the people are following the direction and malicious rhetoric of the parties. Nothing good will come of it.

There is no real compromise, on major issues, to be had with progressives.

Neither is there any real compromise coming from the reactionaries and in both cases, the extremist opinions dominate the narrative.

Except US conservatives are still within the ideology of Western liberalism that has created most of modern day prosperity.
