This could and should be the topic of another thread: Do polls determine facts and should laws and policies be based entirely on those polls. I would suspect that if you took a poll in the United States on May 1, 1847 asking "should slaves and exslaves be granted the same rights as everyone else?" the answer would be absolutely not for a significant percentage of the population. Would that have made slavery an acceptable custom. Would that have made it right?
