Post This Day in History: Secretariat wins Triple Crown!!!

This is one of my all-time sports stories!! Other than (of course):

    TTUN.jpg

On June 9, 1973, Secretariat won the Triple Crown. With a spectacular victory at the Belmont Stakes, Secretariat becomes the first horse since Citation in 1948 to win America’s coveted Triple Crown: the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. In one of the finest performances in racing history, Secretariat, ridden by Ron Turcotte, completed the 1.5-mile race in 2 minutes and 24 seconds, a dirt-track record for that distance.

Secretariat was pulling away as he crossed the line. One of my favorite lines is Announcer Chic Anderson perfectly captured the breathtaking romp to the first Triple Crown in 25 years when he exclaimed,

“Secretariat is widening now. He is moving like a tremendous machine!”

I never tire of watching that video. Toward the end it appears that Big Red is running and the other horses are...I dunno, just doing something else. They say his bone structure and proportions, combined with a heart several sizes larger than that of an average horse, were responsible for his phenomenal success on the track...but I saw a video of the time, shortly after they'd announced his retirement, that Secretariat was brought to one of the tracks just to be lauded - sort of a goodbye ceremony - and he really fought his handlers when they tried to put him back into the trailer afterwards. He wanted to RACE, dammit, and he didn't want to leave till he had!

I remember watching these. I didn't want Secretariat to win at the time, because I liked to root for the underdog. In hindsight, I appreciate the horse and remember him fondly. I had a girlfriend later who was able to see the horse in retirement, she was a big fan. Saw the movie, it was okay, not the greatest. I liked a documentary I had seen on it better. Anyway, amazing horse.

I read that Secretariat sired more than 600 foals, and that many of his female descendants especially have produced or themselves been champions.

There are those who want to outlaw horse raciing, like they have dog racing in Florida, claiming it to be abuse. I submit to you these animals are athletes, not unlike NFL or MLB players are proud to compete and want to compete. Shame about the dog racing in Florida, it meant the death of hundreds of now useless greyhounds.

The horse racing industry is notoriously horrible towards the horses.

Yes, everyone with horses worth 10's of thousands of dollars mistreats them.
