That's not really what's happening.
The four coal-fired plants are aging-out and the best way to replace them is with clean nuclear power. I'm not a fan of either Gates or Buffett but this is a good idea for Wyoming, and it would be a positive move for other states.
The eco-freak trend is to power-down coal and replace it with wind. Problem is, wind is intermittent, so we watched more than 100 people die in Texas in February when the polar vortex rolled through, froze the wind turbines, and the few remaining coal and natural gas plants were unable to take up the slack. Someone really ought to be executed over that fiasco.
The US already derives more than 20% of its power from nuclear--it's safe, it's clean, and most of all--it's reliable, unlike wind and solar.
Most power plants are already privately owned, and the energy industry is highly regulated, so there's not really a risk--in my opinion.
Gates has talked in the past about the inability to develop batteries on the scale necessary to store intermittent energy--and he's right about that. Nuclear is the answer, in my opinion, and if Gates is going to start a trend, I'm all for it.
