"Special needs" is what many people want to hear, while others in the community find it ridiculous. (Though probably not as ridiculous as "differently abled", which I swear I'm not making up.)

While we're on the subject, here is the late Mickey Mantle, filming a commercial announcement for deafness research.

As I have mentioned several times my oldest daughter is deaf. She was taught from the very beginning that the world was not going to adjust to her but she had to adjust to the world. She has worked in a print shop now for 30 years and is well loved by everyone. One person made fun of her a few years back and was immediately fired. She can read lips and can speak although in that deaf monotone. Yes she has a disability and no she cannot be a telemarketer for example but she makes a hell of printer and has done quite well with it.

I hope it's not offensive because we have a lot of them here.

I try to give those hugely obese people on scooters the benefit of the doubt. How many of them are in that condition because of some underlying medical issue? Sometimes the attitude of the individual can be annoying, however. I was in line outside a bookstore for a signing some years ago and a middle-aged man in one of those scooters came zipping up to the front of the line, apparently assuming that he was entitled to do so. (First of all, why should anyone who is sitting down, disabled or not, be able to cut in line ahead of people who have to stand up?) He was all smiles and aren't-I-charming and made it known to everyone - though no one had asked - that he was retired military and a diabetic. I was near the front of the line myself and it took every ounce of my self control not to pull my own retired military ID out of my wallet and tell this guy that I was a diabetic, too.

Most of those people are on scooters because they eat thousands of calories more than required every day.

Look in the baskets attached to the front of those scooters, what's in them? Healthy choices.....medical condition, the entire cookie aisle and, frozen processed foods......self induced obesity.

Why, is obesity considered a disability?

Often, the underlying condition for self-induced obesity is psychological. People use food to sublimate emotional trauma, hence the expression "eating your emotions".

It's still self induced and, shouldn't be called a disability, with a monthly check....being rewarded for bad behavior?

I had often wondered what ever happened to that beautiful actress who was on 'Third Rock From the Sun' - I think her name is Kristen Johnston. Then I saw her on an ad for a current sitcom called 'Mom' and she must have put on a hundred pounds. I did some reading and apparently the weight gain was caused by medications that she had to take to keep her alive...so there's that.

I am very clearly talking about self induced obesity and, how it's easy to tell, by the contents of their shopping carts.

What alternative do you suggest? Generally by the time that they apply for disability, they are barely ambulatory, have serious diabetes, blood pressure and heart ailments, which is why they can no longer work. Do you simply say, tough luck, I guess you'll have to go live under a bridge and pan handle?
