This reminds of the "picnic" fiasco. You may not recall but there was (yet another) delusion circulating among segments of the black community that the concept of a picnic originated in lynching parties. Yeah, seriously.

It's weird though. Doesn't barbecue have a much more obvious and recognized connection to North American slavery than apple pie? It seems like apple pie was chosen more for its association with American traditionalism and broader culture.

So, yes colonists brought over apples and apple seeds, along with the recipe for apple pie. They also brought over honey bees because the native bees didn't recognize the non-native apple tree species and wouldn't pollinate them. That said, I don't know what this has to do with slavery. Apple pie was popular because apples are a particularly hardy fruit that can be stored into the winter months in northern climates.

Sugar cane was definitely an industry that relied on slave labor, but that isn't exclusive to the baking of apple pies or any other fruit pie for that matter. Why the apple pie is particularly impugned, I have no idea. You can use honey or maple syrup/sugar to sweeten an apple pie, if you don't have cane sugar. In fact, in New England the colonists learned how to harvest maple syrup from the natives and for a long time resisted purchasing any cane sugar when the British Sugar Act of 1764 imposed high duties on imported sugar. They also kept bees.

Most of the market for cane sugar was Europe and until it was discovered that it could be grown in the Caribbean, it was imported from Asia. Most of America's cane sugar came from Cuba between the 17th and 19th centuries and yes it was a slavery crop. That doesn't mean that no pies, let alone apple pies would have been baked without the availability of cane sugar.
Of course you know why apple pie is being maligned by these CTR idiots. It is CTR.

Clearly apple pie was chosen because it is a symbol of Americanism i.e. "as American as apple pie". That only makes it all the more opportunistic a target. I expect the next target will be cars, if they haven't already been tied to racism.

I think other parts of the world have dibs on BBQ, so it isn't a particularly American symbol.

Rule of thumb, foods containing the highest amounts of fat and sugar, taste the best. Which is why people on diets, seldom succeed.......which is why it's best to just limit your intake, that way you can eat the foods you love!

    Easy, right!? LOL

There are too many idiots and squeaky wheels being given oxygen nowadays though and if we do just ignore it then it takes hold as is being evidenced with regularity. So I believe it's prudent to rally against it.
