While the end of Slavery is an important historical event it is hardly cause celebration this many generations removed. So the actual purpose is guilt trips and constant reminders of course.
Well the Deviates do have to cover over Joey failing. Plus they knew the Repubs can't come out against it.

Would this be the same kind of federal holiday like the 4th July (Independence Day)?

June 19, 1865. The day federal forces arrived to announce and enforce the end of slavery in Galveston, Texas, and the farthest reaches of the former Confederate territories.

This seems good to me, a historical moment in US history brought about by President Abraham Lincoln.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would make Juneteenth, or June 19th, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

The bill would lead to Juneteenth becoming the 12th federal holiday. It is expected to easily pass the House, which would send it to President Joe Biden for his signature.

Juneteenth commemorates when the last enslaved African Americans learned they were free. Confederate soldiers surrendered in April 1865, but word didn’t reach the last enslaved Black people until June 19, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to Galveston, Texas. That was also about two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves in the Southern states.

“Making Juneteenth a federal holiday is a major step forward to recognize the wrongs of the past,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. “But we must continue to work to ensure equal justice and fulfill the promise of the Emancipation Proclamation and our Constitution.”

The Senate passed the bill under a unanimous consent agreement that expedites the process for considering legislation. It takes just one senator’s objection to block such agreements.

I wouldn't worry about it. I think that whatever organization(s) pushed this are missing the mark (as stated above this was slaves being freed in Texas). They should have pushed for September 22 for their holiday if they wanted a nationally significant event.

    Whatever.

The blue in the text is a link. It takes you to Wiki's page for the Emancipation Proclamation.

Lot's of fighting after the proclamation. Juneteenth works fine.

OK. All I am saying was the EP was a nationally significant event while the 19th of June was local to Texas.

The Texans damn near turned the Civil War in the South's favor. June 19, 1865 appears to be the day the fighting ended. Almost 200 years ago so what's a few days? Point is, it's an important shift in US History. I'm not going to get hung up on a few days.

It is not a big deal to me either.

Interestingly the South could have drawn the war out long enough to negotiate its independence had Jefferson Davis been a better strategist. He could have fought a defensive war in the east which would have allowed more soldiers to be shifted west. They should have focused on preventing the fall of Atlanta. That was their doom. (Grain supplies and the transportation hub for the south was there).
