The shift of the South was not until the moral Majority brought Southern States away from the Democrat party that rejected religion. This started with abortion issues and expanded from there. It just took time for Democrats with morals to give up on the rest of you. The moral majority started in 1979 and peaked in the mid 1980's. The Democrat Party left the Southern Christians.

Slave narratives are interesting. Attempting to judge the people of that era by the standards of today, however, is ludicrous.
