There should be far, far harsher penalties for this kind of thing than exist in most states. In terms of extra-judicial punishment, he seriously needs to be dunked in water and put in a freezer till he's dead. People who go after someone's pets to get back at the person are scum. Many women are afraid to leave abusive husbands or boyfriends because they can't take pets to most shelters and they're afraid of what the guy will do to their animals if they go.

After my sister left her scumbag, abusive husband, the clueless moron told her that he would "allow" her to come back to him if she would let him kill one of her three cats. (Needless to add, that was never going to happen.) My sister went back to school to become a legal secretary - currently 25+ years with the same firm - and some years later her ex was found in his house, having assumed room temperature a week of two before.

That's an awful way to commit suicide, certainly.
