Ukraine’s defense minister is under pressure from members of the government over the decision to have female military cadets wear pumps with heels in an important parade. “The purpose of any military parade is to demonstrate the military ability of the army. There should be no room for stereotypes and sexism,” said a joint statement from three Cabinet members, including Minister of Veterans Affairs Yulia Laputina.

Ivanna Medvid, a cadet at the Military Institute of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev, has been training for more than a month. "Today, for the first time, training takes place in high-heeled shoes," she told Army Inform. "It's a little harder than in boots, but we try."

In the Navy there were periodic command uniform inspections, and the C.O. would of course dictate which uniforms everyone would wear. There were times when a particular Commanding Officer was very predictable as to which uniform he'd have the female personnel wear, and it was invariably skirts, rather than trousers, and heels. My wife, whom I met at our last command, was on active duty for twelve years and confirms that it happened that way a lot.
