First of all, the 101st isn’t a true airborne division. They were at one time. The “airborne” designation was maintained because of history and tradition.

Correct. It was the late 70s when they shifted to all Air Assault.

1973 they left airborne status. 1974 they became the first air mobile division.

The video did call the 10 day Air Assault School the hardest 10 days in the army. I laughed at that.

    No it wasn't.

They do have a high fail rate on the 1st day obstacle course. My barracks was next door to the old Air Assault School, so a lot of us privates went to the course on the weekends and practiced, practiced, practiced.

Later when I was an officer JAG at Ft. Drum, I took two of our female JAGs to that obstacle course to teach them how to do it and they passed the first time. I was surprised, they were both very afraid of heights.

Air assault school was almost like a vacation.

It was cool training. I guess at some point they stopped using the Australian style rappel, which I really liked. Fast-roping came after my time.

We did the Australian both on a tower and from a helicopter. We didn’t fast rope when I went through. Sling loading was not something I liked.
