No cults, no politics, no ghouls: how China censors the video game world

China’s video game market is the world’s biggest. International developers want in on it – but its rules on what is acceptable are growing increasingly harsh. Is it worth the compromise?

I was playing classic Starcraft the other day (it's available online for free), and two hours in, a window with some Asian text popped up on the screen. I first assumed it was Korean, given how popular the game is in South Korea, but it turned out the text was Chinese.

After researching it online, I found it said something like "You've been playing for 2 hours, big brother says to take a break now and do something productive. No futher points for you will be tallied."

That was a bug, that the warning popped up for non-Chinese players, and it may be fixed now. It was just interesting that Blizzard Software inserted such a thing in at the request of the Chinese government.
