A young black woman's perspective and simple yet deep question.

I am writing this in the "Left side" because I would really like to here how the liberals here feel about this article. Please do not mistreat them if they come to drop their opinion on this thread. Obviously the thread is for all memebrs I am just hoping to get at least a couple of the board liberals to express their opinion because I personally think this is a question every young black person should ask themselves.

I suspect the current obsession with race and alleged White Racism is primarily driven by White and Black Radicals who are good at forcing these kind of false memes into the mainstream. They began the assault on a free exchange of thought and ideas pushing PC back in the 90's. With that success they are working on new definitions of racism like "White Privilege" to divide the culture both social and political.

It may calm down at some point as wiser heads prevail or it may get a lot worse?

Interesting article. Unfortunately it's not going to sink in on many.

It's driven primarily by whites. If it wasn't, no one would care.

I'm not sure why, but when I began reading the article I expected it to address the problem - and of course it is a real problem - of some Black people demonstrating and expressing racism toward individuals of other races. If I missed that part of what she was saying, please point it out to me, but I've read the piece carefully twice and I'm not seeing it. Her focus appears to be solely on the tendency of some Black people to place the burden of certain preconceptions and expectations on other Black people, herself included - to see oneself as being above all else a Black person, to consider oneself to be part of an oppressed class, to support all Black organizations and causes, etc.

The piece is headed 'The Very Real Racism Within the Black Community", but I have to conclude that the headline writer either didn't understand what the writer was saying or that they have an odd, perhaps overly broad idea of what constitutes "racism". The writer does note the tension between darker-skinned and lighter-skinned Black people, but only in passing and only in the context of a Black person suspecting White parentage of someone who has "pretty hair". The more common, we're told, phenomenon of Black (young, especially) people self-segregating by skin tone isn't broached.

So, yes, her complaints about what certain other Black people expect her to say and feel and do are undoubtedly quite valid. That does not, however, mean that White people should go out of their way to publicly praise her statements and set her up as a spokesperson; that sort of thing usually backfires in all directions. Her problem - at least the one addressed in the article - is with other Black people, as a Black person. It's her argument and her fight, and the fight of other Black people who feel the same way. In my view, White people can best help her and them by keeping out of it.

There is no doubt about assimilation. That Blacks couldn't do that until recently does affect their thing. It takes several generations for any group to assimilate. There has to be an effort made. Right now, there isn't any.

Yes obsession with race is a good phrase. I fear that assimilation and not seeing color were gradually working until some years ago that didn't set well with the types you describe. For various reasons most of which get back to power, control an activist career or maybe votes. So they changed it and like LBJ set out to assure long term poverty for blacks and forever racial tensions all for attention and personal gain. It's a shame. But their posion seed is doing it's damage the anger is easy to aim at blacks or whites in general which eventually can make the lie true!

Thanks. I personally feel that we were doing OK with assimilation maybe 20 years ago? And that we have actually been pulling away from that since . I know one thing. An organization named BLM that does not even address the real source of tragic young black deaths and actually tells poverty stricken inner city poor that they do not need nuclear family to get ahead as a group lies about it's name.

I took it to be her calling other blacks out on the hypocrisy of their own racism but I may have misread as she is only calling out blacks out on racism towards other blacks. Anti assimilation. But hey it's a start. And all I did was to post this to an obscure message board . I do not have the power to make her a spokeswoman. Also I feel just as much right to post her message as a BLM type might post what you just said. I feel like she doesn't need whites to handle what she said with kid gloves. Lots of whites are currently racist towards whites even self hating.
To be honest I feel like this movement doesn't give a damn about ending discrimination and racism but only about chossing whom it's still OK to treat badly.
I do thank you for your insight.
