Speaking of stupid people...

We're all denizens of Terra. But wherever man walks, he is sovereign over all animals.
Like it or hate it, it is the way of things.
See above.
On this point I agree. The guy was stupid. He shouldn't have been there alone. And just because you're a man doesn't render one immune to consequences of stupid decisions. This guy was apparently being a shovelhead.
That said I also reserve judgement for the bear, although limited in mental faculties they do think and plan accordingly. Most bears leave Badgers alone because they know it is just not worth it. Most of them know that with humans as well - this bear clearly didn't pay attention.
But back to the man - if he wasn't such an idiot we wouldn't need to kill this bear for future safety.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

No matter what stupid mistake I made the day before, I would not just stroll outside and give myself to the bear or even wait for him to peel open his can of human snacks to get me.
That is just it.
I live in the Rockies at about 8500'. We have large numbers of Elk that regularly traverse my property. Along with the Elk come bears and cougars. Fortunately, I don't often meet them, but I see their tracks quite regularly. I have no desire to place myself in a position in which one of them might decide I would be easier to chase down than an Elk.

Perhaps if I were foolish you'd get your wish. But alas I'm not.
Man is not sovereign by simply existing. Our physical frame is much too feeble. It is our genius that sets us apart. So sovereignty being a function of intellect, some men are clearly more sovereign than others.
So returning to the cougar who wouldn't kneel. No, he wouldn't. But he would lay down, by the command of a .357. while our natural weaponry is laughable, our created weaponry is nothing to scoff at.

I'm glad our bears where I live are black bears. That may sound racist and to tell the truth it is based on the black bear's reputation of behaving more like a giant racoon . Unless and until you threten it, it's young or it's territory. Thay have awesome strength and can and have killed humans. So we respect them and they generally don't eat us. Our garbage and ungarded coolers while camping are a different story.
But grizzlies do occasionally hunt people.
