A man has been rescued after spending a week fighting off a grizzly bear in the Alaskan wilderness. With injuries to his leg and torso, and running on a mixture of adrenaline, sleep deprivation and just two remaining rounds of ammunition for his pistol, he was finally spotted by a Coast Guard pilot, Lieutenant Commander Jared Carbajal.
While flying between the Alaskan cities of Kotzebue and Nome, a Coast Guard helicopter crew spotted an SOS sign on top of a shack. Circling back over the remote mining camp, they found a man waving his hands in the air.
Jessee said that after firing a shot at the bear with his pistol, he escaped to his cabin. He told the newspaper that the bear attacked the cabin walls, windows and doors. "There was no doubt about it: The bear was trying to get into my cabin," Jessee said. "I don't know why it was so aggressive. Maybe it had cubs nearby."
